Top 10 Reasons To Be An Atheist

Here is my personal top 10 list of reasons to be an atheist. Most of the items in this list could be categorized as 'top 10 reasons not to be a Christian', but you could easily substitute other religious beliefs as well. I live in America, so of course Christianity would be my natural target for comparison.

  • 10. No reason to listen to Christian contemporary music. Boy, does it suck!
  • 9. Free to enjoy real life and not worry about an imaginary afterlife. We atheist look forward to a bright future for mankind and not to the destruction of the world in holy wars or Armageddon.
  • 8. Atheists can sleep-in on Sundays. Of course, we realize that most self-proclaimed Christians also do this, but we don't have any guilt over it.
  • 7. No Bible (or other holy book). We atheists don't have to spend an inordinate amount of time defending ridiculous ideas, contradictions and atrocities from 2 thousand year old books.
  • 6. Guilt Free Mocking of Pope and other religious nuts. Religion has given the atheist a plethora of wonderful characters to deride and mock at will such as Pat Robertson, the Nazi-youth Pope and Fred Phelps.
  • 5. SEX! Atheists do not feel obligated to be ashamed of our natural human instincts and biology. We can fully explore our sexual selves without any inappropriate guilt imposed by some fisherman or religious nut 2 thousand years ago (or any other author of religious texts).
  • 4. No Rejection of Science and our own intellect. Atheists do not have to ignore scientific evidence which demonstrates the falsehoods of religious dogma. We are free to explore our intellect without any 'blind spots' imposed by faith. I suppose this is why the average atheist is smarter than the average believer.
  • 3. Atheists are in Great Company. Atheists and agnostics have always been leaders in the advancement of mankind from primitive thinking to an enlightened view. Here is a great list of famous atheists. Even if we (atheists) are wrong, think of how much fun Hell is going to be! I am sure that Mark Twain has swindled Beelzebub from power and Einstein and Thomas Edison have probably worked out the whole Hellfire problem to achieve a climate not unlike St Petersburg, Florida.
  • 2. No Sky Daddy. Is there anything creepier than the idea of a great 'Sky Daddy' looking down at you at every moment? Or even worse, your dead relatives peeking in on your life at inopportune moments. We atheists take responsibility for our own actions and answer to our fellow man, not to some Santa for adults.
  • 1. No Christians after the Rapture! This is assuming that they are right, which is completely unlikely. But even so, could an atheist imagine a better world than one in which all the 'true believers' were suddenly whisked away to free the world of religious division and hatred and allow mankind to put our effort into improving the real world and this life for a change!

If you plan to post your top 10 reasons against atheism or in favor of religion, do it on your own blog and don't post it here.

Lolz.

No Christians after rapture. That's a beautiful thought, if only the likes of Bush and Falwall go along with these mentally deluded bunch.

LOL YOU GUYS ARE FUNNY.

AND WHAT WOULD YOU DO WITHOUT CHRISTIANS AFTER THE RAPTURE? I MEAN, YOU WOULD BE LEFT WITHOUT A CAUSE, RIGHT? WHAT WOULD YOU WRITE ABOUT THEN? I AM CURIOUS.

IT EVEN SOUNDS GOOD: "WHAT WOULD ALAN DO?"

Long live reason!!!! It is the only effective antidote to crazy churchiness. Just be sure to watch your back because there is nothing a christian zealot loves more than a dead atheist.
Peace brother!

I would like to apologize: christens though out history have been and continue to be extremely hypocritical and have even waged wars in the name of God. So I would like to apologize to everyone that reads this comment and specifically to the author of Top 10 reasons to be an atheist. And I am not going to try to change your views, I would just like to say I am sorry. Thank you.

ok, so i just have one question that keeps on nagging me. keeping me from being the true unbeliever i aspire to be.
god doesn't exist, science has explained polytheism into the dark ages, except for the one ever present question of, "how the fuck did we get here?"
as a obviously proud atheist, how do you feel about any kind of intelligent design. if god doesn't exist, than intelligent design doesn't exist, but then your still left with the question of how we came to be...i guess i just want to know if it really even matters why or who put us here...i mean, we're here, isn't that enough?

Hey Will,

I think about this a lot and have pretty much come to the conclusion that you mention: Until we discover how 'it' all began, it is enough for me that we are here. Just enjoy the act of being, you know?

We don't know precisely how we got here. However, the answer is not to ascribe this to an unknown god or gods, but to admit our lack of knowledge and pursue the answer.

In short: If you don't know, find out!

Yes, it is enough. Often times, pro-theists will argue that because science can't answer every question, it proves that science is lacking. Unfortunately, that just leads to silliness that results in people filling in the cracks with their own brand of voodoo. "We don't know how the universe actually began...so it must've been god!" It's the theists dream..they have all the answers, so they pretend it makes them smarter than "us".

The fact is, there is no "meaning" to life, life just exists. We don't know why, we don't exactly know how, we just know it does. Personally, I find the answers given by "intelligent" design detract immensely from the universe. The awesome grandeur of the universe is a marvelous thing when you sit and contemplate its scale! To simply say it was created on a whim by some bored god just really detracts from the whole thing in my mind.

I don't know who you are, and you don't know me, but it's painfully obvious that right off the bat you and I disagree on many things. I just wanted to say, without anger or frustration, that I love you. Those are hefty words, but even though I've never met you, I care for you. God loves you, and He still loves you no matter what you've done.

Hutch Frew, I gotta say that sounds both condescending and silly.

This is a very interesting blog. I am neither pro atheist nor do I care for peoples religious beliefs or lack thereof so I hope my comments are welcome here in an open minded forum. I hope some "atheists" can clarify for me though how they perceive love, life, and joy, as a christianless existence since it was the same message Christ himself seemed to preach to the people he encountered. You two seem to be in the same boat if you like peace and love and truth and joy. Do not mistake what I am saying, I cannot stand religious bigotry and I am fully aware that people call themselves Christians or Muslims or Smurfs and use it as a guise to spread their own message like children often do with whatever they believe, or disbelieve. I have studied religion and theology and antitheology for most of my life so the stereotypical arguments cannot satisfy my need for thorough explanation. I am fully aware of what Christ said and find no fault in Him of himself. I do however reject people that like to use his name as though they were devout students. As well I find it funny as someone who is rather "Stoic" if you will, that someone who regards themselves as an atheist would find the same traits that Christ, not christians, taught as pleasing and "good". I am finding that most "atheists" are as hypocritical as the so called "believers" they oppose. True logic and reason leaves no place for emotions to rule or govern ideals such as "peace" or "joy". Those terms are only relevant to people that succumb to an unstable emotional existence. Science affirms that emotions are more or less unbalances of the mind. Truth is the ultimate goal and emotions such as hatred and love are biased. Your mind is not as "open" as you think if you lean one way or the other. It means you are mentally unstable. tossed to and fro like the waves of the sea. You are just another religion, one that teaches against someone else's beliefs. I find you self proclaimed atheist not to rational at all, but just the same as all the televangelists on tv, preaching another hypocritical message. The only people on this blog that even seem sincere are the agnostics that are content with just living and being.....still I question the source of why you would find "enjoyment" in life...."Just because" is not a scientific argument, its childish and needs more foundation. I am waiting to see a solid logical response from fellow evolved slime to my comment entry. If you have nothing educated to say, i warn you, emotional responses will be disregarded. Thank you for your time......
