Why I Blog

I have been asked, mainly by xtians, why I choose to blog about atheism. Atheism is just one part of my life. I could blog about the difficulty of making a living as an artist. I could blog about my political views (only). I could blog about the joy of being both a genius and extremely virile (oh, shouldn't have said that - Sorry Rush).

Instead, I continue to blog about the difficulty of simply being a reasonable non-believer in the United States. Please read the story linked below to understand why I think it is important that xtians be exposed to atheist non-belief and why I think it is important that other doubters, particularly younger ones, realize that they are not alone.

Xtians readers please prepare your excuses for your fellow xtians now.

Atheist Religion

I thought this related well to my earlier post on the theistic argument for 'Atheist Faith'.

Democrats Just Don't Get It

The story below is just another example of how democrats seem to still think that they can beat the repuglicans at their own game. When will they learn that you can't 'Out-God' them?

Obama: Democrats must court evangelicals

By DAVID ESPO, AP Special Correspondent Wed Jun 28, 6:09 PM ET

WASHINGTON - Sen. Barack Obama chastised fellow Democrats on Wednesday for failing to "acknowledge the power of faith in the lives of the American people," and said the party must compete for the support of evangelicals and other churchgoing Americans.

"Not every mention of God in public is a breach to the wall of separation. Context matters," the Illinois Democrat said in remarks to a conference of Call to Renewal, a faith-based movement to overcome poverty.

"It is doubtful that children reciting the Pledge of Allegiance feel oppressed or brainwashed as a consequence of muttering the phrase `under God,'" he said. "Having voluntary student prayer groups using school property to meet should not be a threat, any more than its use by the High School Republicans should threaten Democrats."

Obama, the only black in the Senate, drew national notice even before arriving in Congress last year, and has occasionally used his visibility to scold members of his own party. Widely sought as a fundraiser for other Democrats, Obama responded with a noncommittal laugh this spring when asked whether he wants a spot on the national ticket in 2008.

His speech included unusually personal references to religion, the type of remarks that usually come more readily from Republicans than Democrats.

"Kneeling beneath that cross on the South Side of Chicago, I felt I heard God's spirit beckoning me," he said of his walk down the aisle of the Trinity United Church of Christ. "I submitted myself to his will and dedicated myself to discovering his truth."

Obama said millions of Christians, Muslims and Jews have traveled similar religious paths, and that is why "we cannot abandon the field of religious discourse. ... In other words, if we don't reach out to evangelical Christians and other religious Americans and tell them what we stand for, Jerry Falwells and Pat Robertsons will continue to hold sway."

Obama coupled his advice with a warning. "Nothing is more transparent than inauthentic expressions of faith: the politician who shows up at a black church around election time and claps — off rhythm — to the gospel choir."

At the same time, he said, "Secularists are wrong when they ask believers to leave their religion at the door before entering the public square."

As a result, "I think we make a mistake when we fail to acknowledge the power of faith in the lives of the American people and join a serious debate about how to reconcile faith with our modern, pluralistic democracy."

Obama mentioned leaders of the religious right briefly, saying they must "accept some ground rules for collaboration" and recognize the importance of the separation of church and state.

My Nutty Georgia Neighbors

This post is actually a challenge to other atheists who live in Bible Belt or Red State towns or cities. See if you can beat this authenticated story with a story demonstrating the ignorance of the believers who are your neighbors. I should have posted this back on the 6th!

666 Appears on 'Passion' Movie Tickets
AP 3-1-2004, Rome, GA

Tickets at one movie theater screening Mel Gibson's "The Passion of the Christ" are being deemed decidedly unholy.

The number 666, which many Christians recognize as the "mark of the beast," is appearing on movie tickets for Gibson's film at a Georgia theater, drawing complaints from some moviegoers.

The machine that prints tickets assigned the number 666 as a prefix on all the tickets for the film, said Gary Smith, owner of the Movies at Berry Square in northwest Georgia. The 666 begins a series of numbers that are listed below the name of the movie, the date, time and price.

"It's from our computer and it's absolutely a coincidence," Smith said. "It has nothing to do with the film company or any vendor. It's completely in our computer."

In the Bible, the book of Revelation says 666 is the "number of the beast," usually interpreted as Satan or the Antichrist.

Several patrons have made comments about the numbers, and one person who was uncomfortable having 666 on her ticket asked for a pass to be substituted for a ticket.

"A lot of people have asked what the numbers mean, some said it seemed odd, some said it was inappropriate," said theater employee Erica Diaz.

The movie, which opened Wednesday, is a bloody depiction of Christ's final hours and crucifixion.

Idiotic Theist Arguments

I have to admit that I am somewhat entertained now, rather than irritated, by some of the more idiotic arguments that we atheists get from believers trying to convince us that we do actually believe in God or have 'faith' whether we realize it or not. The most insane of these arguments is the 'You sit in a chair - therefore you have faith' argument.

I am going to let one of my anonymous moronic xtian trolls explain this argument in the quote which follows:

You basically say that faith is a lie. So, do you sit in chairs? If you do, I assume you believe they will hold you up when you sit in them.
Actually you do have faith. You have faith that there is no GOD.

To anyone with an ounce of common sense, comparing the act of sitting in a chair to the belief that an invisible man and his imaginary son rule the universe (along with a ghost) is preposterous. It is quite disturbing that there are people walking the streets of this country whose minds are so whacked that they could relate two such things. It is not as if this asinine argument is rare either. It seems to be a staple of xtian apologetics.

With arguments such as this in support of their cause, it is no wonder that atheist are the largest growing segment of the population in terms of belief and that christianity continues to fall in numbers. Come on believers; screw your heads on right! We atheists are statistically smarter than the average bear (or believer) and we aren't going to be convinced with the insane logic of brainwashed morons.

Wish More Christians Would Try This

This was too good (but sad) to pass up.

From The Australian

Kiev
June 5, 2006

A MAN shouting that God would keep him safe was mauled to death by a lioness in Kiev zoo after he crept into the animal's enclosure, a zoo official said on today.

"The man shouted 'God will save me, if he exists', lowered himself by a rope into the enclosure, took his shoes off and went up to the lions," the official said.

"A lioness went straight for him, knocked him down and severed his carotid artery."

The incident, yesterday evening when the zoo was packed with visitors, was the first of its kind at the attraction. Lions and tigers are kept in an "animal island" protected by thick concrete blocks.
